Failing of the timing belt is a serious problem that can cause severe engine damage. Therefore, it is important that the belt gets checked and replaced before it slips or breaks. We recommend replacing it every 60,000 – 100,000 miles, but it may be needed more often, depending on your vehicle and the belt manufacturer’s make.

How Serious a Timing Belt Failure Can Be

If the belt breaks while your car is in motion, it can cause serious engine damage, especially if your vehicle does not have a non-interference engine. If the cambelt gets broken when your car is standing still, you will not be able to start the engine at all.

Signs of a Broken or Failing Timing Belt

• Ticking noise. It is one of the most common and first signs of the failing belt. If you are hearing a ticking noise produced by the engine while you are driving, it is time to check your cambelt.
• You cannot start the engine. You will face this problem if the belt is completely broken.
• Leaking oil. If the belt starts failing, the bolts and nuts securing the belt’s cover can become loose, which will cause an oil leak.
• Engine misfires. The failing timing belt can affect the engine’s timing, which leads to misfires. Therefore, if you start experiencing misfires, it is a bad sign and you should get your cambelt checked as soon as possible.
• Significant loss of power. If the timing belt is not good, your car may start losing acceleration power.
• The flashing engine light. Usually, it is either the sign that there is something wrong with the engine, or that your cambelt is failing.
